Knuth moves to secure Mt Garnet pool
MT GARNET residents are hoping Member for Hill Shane Knuth can help them get a new public swimming pool after Tablelands Regional Council decided to decommission their old pool but not to replace it.
As soon as Mr Knuth was sworn in last week, he immediately contacted the new Minister for Sport, Tim Mander, to advocate for the community who are upset by the council’s decision not to build a new pool.
The old pool, which was paid for by the community in the 1980s, was unable to be repaired, according to the council, and a new pool would cost an estimated $3 million - a figure the community and Cr Annette Haydon has questioned.
“I spoke to the Minister for Sport at parliament sitting this week and have secured a meeting with him next sitting week in December with representatives of the Mt Garnet Swimming Pool Committee to discuss funding for the town pool,” Mr Knuth said.
“If the council doesn’t want to support the community, then we will go it alone to source the funding through the State Government.”
It is understood that Mr Knuth has also written to the council to express his disappointment that it has decided not to replace the old facility.
