Locals take a stand against domestic violence

Queenslanders around the country decorated their letterboxes white for White Ribbon Day on Friday, 20 November to help raise awareness for Domestic Violence.
Due to the uncertainty of COVID White Ribbon Australia asked people to decorate their letterboxes white for White Ribbon Day this year to help raise awareness and start conversations on domestic violence.
Queenslanders were asked to decorate their letterboxes with white ribbons, white balloons, white lights, white teddy bears, white flowers, streamers or bed sheets to raise awareness.
Robert larkin from Ambassador for White Ribbon Australia at Mareeba Community Housing said that domestic and family violence is something that should never occur.
“White Ribbon Day is your chance to stand together and protest the violence shown to women and children, domestic and family,” he said.
“It is not right people shouldn’t be getting abused, physically, emotionally or any other way.
“No one has a right to abuse anyone so people should take a stance and say no we don’t want to accept that in our community.”
Chair of White Ribbon Queensland Chiu-Hing Chan has said that the statistics surrounding domestic violence in the home have tripled during COVID.
“We are looking for support from the community and businesses to assist us in mobilising change,” he said.
“The purpose of White Ribbon Day this year is not only to speak about the change that is needed but to also get involved.”
