New mural celebrates diversity at school
A POP of colour has been added to Mareeba State School with a new mural freshly installed, showing off the school’s morals, culture and diversity
Putting her skills to the test, local artist and former teacher Loretta Scamolla painted the entire mural, with an aim of successfully portraying the sporting, cultural and art aspects of the school.
Principal Hannah Simpson expressed her pride for the newlyinstalled mural and how it showcased the inclusivity of her school.
“Ms Loretta created this piece of art that is really close to our hearts, and she had the students involved by having their handprints within the mural which is something that is very important to us,” she said.
“We reached out to the parents, teachers and students to see what they would like displayed in the mural and Ms Loretta, with her creative gem, has been able to pull it all together.
“We wanted to show that everyone belongs as well as showing a bit of what our school was and what it is now – we encourage everyone to come along and have a look.”
The mural was officially opened on Monday by Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin and was funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund.
